As you may be aware, we are in the process of upgrading Winamp.com to a more robust and secure registration and authentication system.

This new authentication system will also support "Screen Name Service" (also referred to as "SNS"), which is owned and operated by Nullsoft's parent company, AOL LLC ("AOL").

This is the first of many steps Winamp is taking to offer other authentication methods and this upgrade will enable some pretty exciting new Winamp features... stay tuned to the blog... more information to follow.

So what does this all mean to Winamp.com users? For the most part, these upgrades will not change your login. You can continue to use your existing Winamp name and password at the current login page. In some cases, you may need a new account if your password was not secure (see Winamp.com Password Update). What does change, is that your Winamp account will provide you with access to additional AOL products and services.

Once the new user identity system is launched, the only action required on your part, is that the first time you login with your new SNS-enabled account, you will be required to agree to AOL's terms of service (TOS) and privacy policy, which governs your use of SNS. If you happen to be a current AOL user, and registered for Winamp with your AOL or AIM screen name, then you can use your existing AOL screenname and password to log into Winamp.

***Clarifications posted on 14-May***

We are seeing some comments about the log-in system we just launched and we want to clarify a few points. This log-in upgrade does not affect the Winamp Media Player, and no additional software applications are being installed. This change is only related to the log-in on Winamp.com, as the previous system did not support the new features we have planned.

Additionally, Winamp did not change owners. AOL has been Nullsoft's parent company for 10 years and during that time Winamp developers have had the flexibility to produce great features and will continue doing so. Leveraging the AOL log-in system allows the Nullsoft team to focus on what we do best... building a great media player.

my System requirements are amd seprom(tm) processor
2800+
1.61 Ghz 448 mb of ram.

44. I purchase Winamp Pro 2 times this year, How can i get my money back for one of them???? I found i had it back up on disk after i purchased it today.

I now finally understand why it's been going downhill for some time now with Winamp. (Probably since 1999 ;-)
Shame, since I've been using it since, well, I can't even remember anymore!!

48. The AOL system has broken my login. On the login page there is a broken mini frame with a clipped "OOPS" message from AOL, no space to enter a user name or password. My browser: Firefox 3.5. I have enabled all Javascript and disabled all A blocking software, still the same broken behavior!

You urgently need to fix this - I won't be forced to use Internet Explorer for logging on to Winamp.

50. I would love to get the Pro version, but apparently it is no longer available. I tried three times to upgrade and all three times the process locked up without completion. Does anyone know of another way to purchase?

53. To whose who say that there's nothing wrong to be owned by AOL - you are very naive. You can't put yourself in the middle of dirt and still remain clean. Besides, AOL is one of the most universally hated companies in the world, fully deserved because of anti-consumer and often criminal tactics being their norm (google for AOL class action to see the scale of this), and it's totally understood that folks simply don't want to be near this disgusting criminal entity, even if in this particular case it does nothing wrong.

55. That's odd. Sorry you're having issues. I'll ping the QA team to see if they are aware of any Windows 7 issues that would cause the sound to stop working. Have you changed any other setting? Or perhaps installed another 3rd party plug-in?

I've seen DJ Egg try to help trouble shoot this on various forum posts or feedback responses to users.... but here are some tips:

The most obvious thing to check would be that the volume slider in the main Winamp window is up high enough. Sometimes you can accidentally/unknowingly zero it with the mouse scrollwheel.

You should also verify that the Main & Wave levels are up high enough in Windows Volume Control Panel. And obviously check to see that your speakers are on and up high enough to be heard.

The next thing to check would be that the Direct Sound Output is the selected Output Plugin in Prefs -> Plugins -> Output. Sometimes, users switch to DiskWriter Output and forget to switch back after they are done.

It's also advisable to make sure your soundcard is selected in the Device drop-down menu in DirectSound Output config (as opposed to the default "Primary Sound Driver" option), and recommended to checkmark "Enable hardware acceleration" (which is checkmarked by default, on clean installs).

One other possible things to check (although unlikely cause, but you never know)...

Check or Uncheck "Allow 24-bit playback" in Winamp -> Prefs -> Playback
(e.g. may cause problems with old 16-bit soundcards if checkmarked. If you don't have an old 16-bit soundcard, then you don't even need to try this suggestion)
